    Jan Swartz of Princess Cruises and Cunard Line Named Chair of CLIA's Marketing Committee

    Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) has announced that Jan Swartz, executive vice president of sales, marketing and customer service for Princess Cruises and Cunard Line, will take the helm of the association’s marketing committee effective January 1, 2011. She succeeds Richard Sasso, president and CEO of MSC Cruises USA, in a normal rotation of responsibilities. Swartz has previously served as a member of the marketing committee.

    CLIA, CRUISE LINES AND TRAVEL AGENCIES GENERATE MILLIONS IN SALES DURING 2010 “WORLD LARGEST CRUISE NIGHT

    If sales during World’s Largest Cruise Night 2010 (WLCN) are any indication, consumer confidence is on the rebound. CLIA member cruise lines and travel agencies report an expected $47+ million in sales resulting from WLCN events on October 13 and virtual promotions throughout October, generating over $6 million in potential commissions, according to a new survey of participants*.

    TRAVEL AGENTS, CRUISE LINES ENTHUSIASTICALLY ON BOARD FOR CLIA’S WORLD’S LARGEST CRUISE NIGHT, OCTOBER 13

    Last year, World’s Largest Cruise Night (WLCN) generated an expected $45 million in cruise sales and nearly $6 million in new commissions for travel agents. Judging by the preparations and announced plans underway, both agents and CLIA member cruise lines are gearing up for an even bigger WLCN 2010, which is scheduled for October 13.

    Celebrating its 35th Year, CLIA Releases New Environmental Report “Charting a Sustainable Course”

    The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) today released two new resources, an environmental report and complementary video, on the occasion of CLIA’s 35th anniversary this year. The new report, ‘CLIA at 35: Steering a Sustainable Course,’ depicts the evolution of the modern cruise industry as it continues its efforts toward conservation and the minimization of the industry’s impact on the environment in the years since CLIA’s founding in 1975.

    CLIA NAMES BUD DARR DIRECTOR OF ENVIRONMENTAL AND HEALTH PROGRAMS

    Charles (Bud) Darr, formerly of the U.S. Coast Guard, has been named Director of Environmental and Health Programs for Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). He will be responsible for all aspects of the cruise industry’s environmental and health matters including chairing CLIA’s environmental and medical Committees and serving as industry liaison to various international organizations. “Environmental concerns and health issues are two top priorities for the cruise industry.

    CLIA RELEASES REPORT ON INDUSTRY’S 2009 CONTRIBUTIONS

    Details on the North American cruise industry’s overall economic impact in the United States in 2009 were released today by the Cruise Lines International Association. "Despite a protracted global recession, the North American cruise industry continued to make an impact on the U.S. economy in 2009,” said Terry Dale, CLIA’s president and CEO. Last year was tough for everyone. We are encouraged that the current economic climate is showing signs of improvement and cruise lines have been reporting strong activity thus far in 2010.”

    CLIA’S FIRST CRUISE3SIXTY IN CANADA BREAKS RECORDS

    Celebrating women of influence and accomplishment in travel and business and putting a spotlight on key issues facing the industry, Cruise Lines International Association’s cruise3sixty 2010 conference and trade show in Vancouver, June 2-6, had 1,407 registered travel selling professional delegates resulting in 1,220 agents onsite. Including exhibitors and suppliers, cruise3sixty hosted nearly 2100 total delegates. cruise3sixty also welcomed 302 trade show exhibitor booths – both record-breaking numbers.

    Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) has announced five inductees to the 2010 Cruise Industry Hall of Fame. Honored at a gala dinner on June 5 during cruise3sixty in Vancouver will be: Micky Arison, Carnival Corp. plc's chairman and CEO; Matthew Upchurch, CEO of Virtuoso; the travel industry educators, marketers and travel agents Doris and Phil Davidoff; and the Society for Accessible Travel & Hospitality (SATH).

    CLIA OPENS REGISTRATION FOR TRAININGFEST 2010

    Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) has opened registration for TrainingFest 2010, the two-day program that travels throughout North America and provides a “Fast Track” for travel agent training and Certification. Between July and September, 11 cities will be visited, from California to the East Coast and Toronto, Canada.
