    CLIA AND CRUISE INDUSTRY A MAJOR PRESENCE FOR FIRST TIME AT SITE GLOBAL CONFERENCE

    Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) partnered with the Society of Incentive Travel Executives (SITE) to educate and promote cruising during the network of meeting and event professionals’ annual Global Conference which took place in Orlando this week.  Eleven CLIA Cruise Line Members came together to sponsor the SITE Global Conference with opportunities for attendees to expand their knowledge on the variety of cruise ship options, from luxury to contemporary, and to review the benefits for both the corporate and the meeting planner of selecting a cruise ship.  This was the first year the cruise industry has had a major presence at the conference, including CLIA Vice President, Business Development Didier Scaillet as a keynote speaker during a CLIA breakfast.

    CLIA EXPANDS WITH NATIONAL ORGANIZATION IN SPAIN

    MADRID – CLIA Europe’s Chairman, Manfredi Lefebvre d’Ovidio, today announced the establishment of CLIA Spain at the International Cruise Summit 2013 in Madrid. The new national association will be headquartered in Madrid and will be chaired by Belen Wangüemert, the General Manager in Spain and France for Royal Caribbean International, Azamara Club Cruises and Celebrity Cruises. The association will be managed by Alfredo Serrano, CLIA Spain’s new National Director. This follows CLIA’s expansion of resources in Europe this year and CLIA Spain joins CLIA Germany, CLIA UK & Ireland, CLIA France, CLIA Netherlands, and CLIA Belgium & Luxembourg as the thirteenth association operating under CLIA’s newly established global structure.

    CLIA WELCOMES ENTRY INTO FORCE OF MARITIME LABOUR CONVENTION

    Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) today announced it welcomes the entry into force of the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) 2006 Maritime Labour Convention (MLC).   The MLC provides further worker protections and rights for crewmembers, providing them specific rights related to all facets of employment, including wages, hours, medical care, annual and shore leave, and room and board.

    STUDY SHOWS U.S. CRUISE INDUSTRY A SUBSTANTIAL CONTRIBUTOR TO U.S. ECONOMY

    The North American cruise industry continued to be a substantial contributor to the U.S. economy in 2012 according to an independent study commissioned by Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). The study shows that CLIA’s 26 North American member lines and their passengers and crew contributed over $42 billion in total U.S. economic impact, a 4.6 percent increase from 2011. In addition, the cruise industry generated 356,311 jobs, paying a record $17.4 billion in wages to American workers.

    INTERNATIONAL MARITIME ORGANIZATION (IMO) ADOPTS ADDITIONAL MEASURES FROM GLOBAL CRUISE INDUSTRY TO ENHANCE PASSENGER SHIP SAFETY

    Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) today announced that the IMO has implemented three additional safety-related policies from the 2012 Global Cruise Industry Operational Safety Review at the recently completed IMO Maritime Safety Committee meeting. All ten policies from the Review have now been included in formal IMO standards specific to Passenger Ship Safety.

    CLIA Commends International Maritime Organization for Adopting Robust Worldwide Guidelines on Preservation of Evidence and Care of Persons Affected

    Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) today commended the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Legal Committee for adopting at its recent meeting in London a proposal which CLIA co-sponsored on international standards for crime reporting, cooperation between governments, evidence preservation and care for victims.
