“Based on this year’s response, we are wasting no time gearing up for cruise3sixty 2010,” said Terry Dale, president and CEO of CLIA. “Despite economic jitters, there is tremendous enthusiasm for this event. Plus, we will be in the great city of Vancouver that has enormous appeal for travel agents and cruise lines. Therefore, we fully expect yet another record turnout.”

With American Express as presenting sponsor, cruise3sixty 2009, held in Fort Lauderdale April 2-6, topped 2,000 delegates, with not only a record number of registrations but the largest number of trade show participants ever, and a record level of sponsorship. The event has become bigger every year of its existence and this year proved no exception, even in today’s economic climate.

The mood in Fort Lauderdale last week was upbeat as cruise3sixty participants received advice and inspiration for thriving during hard times and preparing for the inevitable economic recovery. A full program of panel discussions, seminars and workshops were well-attended and many agents propelled themselves toward CLIA certification through training programs and more than a dozen cruise ship inspections in Port Everglades and the Port of Miami . In fact, during the course of cruise3sixty, 15 CLIA seminars were offered and a total of 2,477 CLIA training events were delivered to attending agents. Highlights of the conference included:

  • An opening keynote address by Daniel Doctoroff, president of Bloomberg LP, one of the world's leading information services, news and media companies. Doctoroff told his audience of travel agents, cruise line officials and industry suppliers that major innovation driving fundamental change will pull the country out of its current economic turmoil, just as it has repeatedly throughout America's history. “The cruise industry is betting on its future. That is a bet I would take,” he said.
  • A CEO discussion entitled "Maintain Course and Full Speed Ahead, ‘When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Keep Selling'" with Rick Sasso of MSC Cruises; Gerry Cahill of Carnival Cruise Lines; Carol Marlow, Cunard Line; Adam Goldstein, Royal Caribbean International; and Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line.
  • A keynote by Barbara Corcoran, self-made millionaire and founder of the five-billion dollar Corcoran Group real estate company in New York City . Corcoran motivated agents with powerful personal examples of how she triumphed over adversity in order to achieve tremendous success.
  • Panel discussions on a variety of topics, including the importance of targeting minority markets, strategies for selling luxury, and opportunities for agents to profit from a broad range of small ship products.
  • A presentation by Douglas Quinby, senior director at PhoCusWright, on “The Unchartered Internet: Navigating the New New Media.” Quinby made a case for social media vehicles, such as Facebook, potentially being a more effective and profitable marketing tool than email, direct mail and advertising. He noted that one out of every 11 minutes online is spent on social media sites.
  • The gala CLIA Hall of Fame Dinner where four industry leaders were inducted: Edwin W. Stephan, founder of Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines; Walter Sherota, founder of Gold Coast Cruises; and Josephine Kling and Joyce Landry, founders of Landry & Kling, Inc.
