— August 3, 2012 — Washington, D.C. - In honor of Coast Guard Day tomorrow, August 4, the charity funded by the Cruise Lines International Association member cruise lines, Cruise Industry Charitable Foundation(CICF), announces a $5,000 donation to Coast Guard Mutual Assistance.
“The cruise industry today thanks and honors the thousands of men and women that make up the U.S. Coast Guard for their service to our nation,” said CLIA President and CEO Christine Duffy, on behalf of CICF. “They work tirelessly each day, working with our member cruise lines and our partners to protect our passengers and crew, and keep our ships safe. We owe a deep debt of gratitude to the members of the Coast Guard and their families.”
The Coast Guard Mutual Assistance fund was established as the “League of Coast Guard Women” in 1924. Today, it continues to operate separately from the Coast Guard to aid all members of the entire Coast Guard family, promoting financial stability of active duty and retired military personnel, civilian employees, reservists, and their families. The cruise industry works with the Coast Guard to help ensure safety, screen crew and passengers, inspect the ships, and to promote environmental stewardship, including through compliance with air emissions standards. The Coast Guard was signed into action by President George Washington in 1790.
