Zurich Switzerland
Straddling both sides of the Limmat River flowing out of Lake Zurich, the tiny village that became Zurich www.Zeurich.com started at Lindenhof, now its historic and architectural center, the Aldstadt. Grossmünster’s dual spires tower above the cityscape. Most believe the ancient cathedral was commissioned by Charlemagne in 1100 to honor two martyrs.
Below Lindenhof square is Bahnhofstrasse, one of the world’s most expensive shopping districts. Starting at Hauptbahnhof railway station, exclusive boutiques like Chanel, Dior, Cartier, Armani and Vuitton line the avenue, alongside some of the world’s largest banks.
Globus and Jelmoli department stores are perfect for souvenir shopping. When crossing this busy avenue filled with quiet electric trams, take the rail station escalator down to the underground Shopville mall, then exit up the other side.
In warm weather, Lake Zurich is perfect to rent a rowboat or take the Zürichsee steamer two hours to Rapperswil. Site of a 13th century castle now Switzerland’s Polish Museum, Rapperswil also offers a rose garden, deer park and zoo.
In the historic Wartau tram depot, Zurich’s Tram Museum explains tram history, its technology and recreates yesteryear’s transportation methods. For beautiful views, try Polybahn, the 19th century funicular to climb up the steep hill from the Central tram station.
Over 2000 restaurants serve Zurich gastronomes year round, then 400 more open air eateries appear in warmer months. Unlike Munich, Zurich beer halls like Bierhalle Krop focus more on the eating than drinking with generous comfort foods like Kalbsbratwurst sausages and Rösti, fried shredded potatoes.
