CLIA Breaking News

CLIA’S FIRST CRUISE3SIXTY IN CANADA BREAKS RECORDS

June 2-6 Conference and Trade Show in Vancouver Draws 1,407 Agent Registrations, 302 Exhibitors and 44 Sponsors.

Celebrating women of influence and accomplishment in travel and business and putting a spotlight on key issues facing the industry, CLIA’s cruise3sixty 2010 conference and trade show in Vancouver, June 2-6, had 1,407 registered travel selling professional delegates resulting in 1,220 agents onsite. Including exhibitors and suppliers, cruise3sixty hosted nearly 2100 total delegates. cruise3sixty also welcomed 302 trade show exhibitor booths – both record-breaking numbers.

Even as CLIA was announcing that registration for cruise3sixty 2011 in Fort Lauderdale is already open, feedback about this year’s Vancouver conference, received from agents on CLIA’s Facebook Fan page, included rave reviews.

Reflecting the growing importance of Canada’s cruise market, Canadian agents accounted for 46% of cruise3sixty attendees this year, with American participation evenly distributed between eastern and western regions of the U.S. Among international participants there were 25 delegates from Australia as well as from Brazil, India, Turkey and other countries around the world, another strong indication of the globalization of the industry. In its sixth year, this was the first time cruise3sixty was held outside of Fort Lauderdale, where the association is headquartered. Once again, American Express was cruise3sixty’s Presenting Sponsor, joined by Tourism Vancouver, Port Metro Vancouver, Vancouver International Airport, Super, Natural British Columbia and a host of other sponsors, including Amadeus and Sabre Travel Network.

"cruise3sixty has grown bigger and better each year and we were delighted by the exceptionally strong response to holding it in the magnificent city of Vancouver," said Terry L. Dale, CLIA’s president and CEO. "In addition to our many loyal travel agent partners from the United States, the strong showing by agents from Canada and other parts of the world are an indication of how important international business and the globalization of cruise operations are for the industry going forward. Our heartfelt thanks to all our sponsors and everyone who helped to make cruise3sixty 2010 a resounding success."

The conference opened with a welcome reception for all delegates at the Vancouver Aquarium complete with a dolphin show starring CLIA’s president. After introductory remarks by Rick Antonson, president and CEO of Tourism Vancouver and Chris Badger, chief operating office of Port Metro Vancouver, the first general session got underway with the "A View from the Bridge" Presidents Panel. Representing Crystal Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Cunard Line, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, and Windstar Cruises, the panel fielded questions about what the industry learned from the recession that can be applied to the future from Dr. Lalia Rach, dean at the Tisch Center for Hospitality, Tourism and Sports Management at New York University.

Acknowledging the important role of agents, Dan Hanrahan, Celebrity’s president, noted "a lesson we’re not likely to forget: that we’re lucky to have good partners at a time when you can’t do things alone." The executives were unanimous in citing value as the industry’s strongest sales message. "No other holiday can deliver the value that cruising does," said Peter Shanks, Cunard’s president and managing director. Stein Kruse, of Holland America, said he was struck by the irony that in 1982 cruise prices were higher than they are now while today’s product is "vastly superior." The presidents were later joined by Jo Kling, president of Landry & Kling, and Claire Bennett, senior VP at American Express, who joined a discussion of strategies for attracting first time cruisers as well as ways to encourage young people to become travel agents.

The latter topic was echoed later in the conference in a panel discussion entitled "Developing and Mentoring the Travel Agent of Tomorrow" in which the agent panelists agreed that the term "travel agent" may be outdated and stressed the importance of focusing on the professionalism, training and experience of today’s cruise sellers. The value of mentoring, including reverse-mentoring (young mentoring more experienced professionals) and the frequent need to mentor clients, was a common theme in this and other panel discussions at cruise3sixty. This was particularly true among panelists taking on the topic "Does Gender Affect Decision Making and Leadership?" All eight male and female executives from the industry cited the importance of a highly valued mentor in their success. Other panel discussions included "The Small Ship Experience Delivers Big Rewards" and "Redefining Luxury in a New Economy."

"Do You Need to be More Social?" was a panel discussion which investigated the uses of social networking and proved to be exceptionally popular among agent participants. Terry Dale surprised speakers and panelists throughout the conference with questions that were "tweeted" from agents in the audience to his offstage "tweet spot". In addition, Cruise Critic editor Carolyn Spencer Brown blogged live throughout the three general sessions on panel, industry and speaker topics.

In a cruise3sixty keynote address that was as entertaining as it was inspiring, adventurer and business executive Alison Levine, who only three days previously had returned from leading a successful ascent of Mt. Everest by American women, told delegates "fear is okay, complacency is what will kill you." Applying what she has learned in mountain climbing, she advised agents to "take prudent risks" and, when a task seems impossible, to "break it down into smaller parts," much as she and her team of climbers had to do when every step on Everest required ten deep breaths of oxygen. cruise3sixty delegates also heard from Craig E. Campbell, lieutenant governor of Alaska, who pledged the state’s commitment to making the selling of cruises to Alaska easier and more profitable; to Sean Arena, of Sabre Travel Network, who pointed out the similarities of composing electronic music and the technology driving cruise booking systems today; and to Monique Moyer, who spoke of balancing her role as executive director of the Port of San Francisco with being a wife and mother and about San Francisco’s port redevelopment projects.

Throughout the course of the conference, agents participated in 15 CLIA seminars to earn up to 135 credits toward CLIA Certification as well as workshops, destination briefings, cruise line product demonstrations and booking demo’s. CLIA training seminars taught a total of 2,425 participants, with many agents taking more than one course. On June 5th, during a gala dinner that featured entertainment by Blue Man Group, presented by Norwegian Cruise Line, and 42Five, a featured act offered by Celebrity Cruises, CLIA’s Cruise Industry Hall of Fame inducted four new members: Micky Arison, Carnival Corp. plc’s chairman and CEO; the travel industry educators, marketers and travel agents Doris and the late Phil Davidoff; Matthew Upchurch, CEO of Virtuoso; and the Society for Accessible Travel & Hospitality (SATH).

Ship inspection opportunities during the conference included: Holland America Line’s Volendam, Ryndam and Zuiderdam; Silversea Cruises’ Silver Shadow; Royal Caribbean International’s Radiance of the Seas; Princess Cruises’ Diamond Princess; and Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Mercury. The vessels hosted a total of 1,977 agents.

Immediately following cruise3sixty, participants were asked to comment on CLIA’s Facebook Fan page on what they enjoyed most about this year’s cruise3sixty conference. Some of the early responses included: "I loved how engaged the agents were in learning about all aspects of the cruise industry," "It was my first time and I really enjoyed meeting all the interesting people from all over the world!" "Still too ‘kewl’ for school. You hit it dead on with Terry’s Tweets and the theme of social networking and mentoring," "It was a great show and the venue fantastic!"

Using Happy Travelers’ Testimonials: 8 Great Techniques - By: Joanie Ogg, CTC, MCC

Here are some great ways to use your customers’ success stories in your sales and marketing endeavors when prospecting for new clients. Talk about the benefits and value you add to the vacation buying experience. Share your good news stories and win the business!
  1. Your Web site: Your site is often a traveler’s first impression of your travel business. Make sure to begin building on the relationship by highlighting your success stories right on the homepage and in other pages throughout your site.
  2. Your Blog: If you are a blogger, try to weave in satisfied clients stories when posting in your blog. When you talk about a subject, use a client’s story as an example. Make it up-close and personal!
  3. Your Newsletter: Share happy client’s travel stories with your prospects, current customers and other interested readers. This reinforces the expertise and value you bring to their vacation planning process.
  4. Your Email Marketing: If you are using Email marketing, be sure to include a compelling success story in your campaign with a call to action for future business.
  5. Your Direct Mail Marketing: Write a story about a happy customer and feature a new one in each piece along with pictures.
  6. Your Cruise & Vacation Events: If you host a cruise or other vacation event to feature your upcoming group or travel specials, think about inviting a current happy client in to tell their story to the group. There is nothing like a personal endorsement to capture the confidence of the prospect and ultimately the sale.
  7. Your Sales Conversations: People listen more closely when someone starts telling a story. Engage prospects in live or phone conversations with a relevant example of a successful customer.
  8. Your Proposals: When writing up a proposal for a new piece of business or a group booking, include a couple of your client’s stories and if possible his or her contact information if they approve you doing so.

In conclusion, always check with your “happy customers” before using their names, pictures or any other information of a personal nature. Give them the opportunity to share how great you are in their own words and shout out the good news. And, come in and share your stories with fellow travel professionals at www.HBTACommunity.com. We all like to hear good news!

CLIA Industry Focus

Alaska Administration Reaches Out to Cruise Industry

Alaska Lieutenant Governor Craig Campbell traveled to Vancouver for cruise3sixty with one purpose in mind – to assure the cruise industry that his state welcomes cruise line business. The appearance before more than 1,200 agents and cruise line executives reinforced the message his boss, Governor Sean Parnell, delivered to the industry during Cruise Shipping Miami earlier in the year.

To demonstrate Alaska’s determination to win the hearts of the cruise industry, the Parnell administration recently successfully urged the state legislature to reduce a tourism head tax from $46 to $34.50 and boost tourism marketing by 80 percent. Alaska has seen a decline in cruise ship visits, in part because of the head tax.

Speaking at cruise3sixty, Campbell emphasized Alaska’s eagerness to work with the cruise industry on a long-term basis to create a mutually beneficial partnership.

Ports Around the World Invest in New Cruise Facilities

New York has refurbished its cruise terminal in Manhattan and built facilities in Brooklyn, Port Everglades recently opened the world’s largest cruise terminal to accommodate Oasis and Allure of the Seas at a cost of $75 million, and San Francisco is investing millions to redesign and renovate Pier 27, the port’s historic finger piers, to create a state-of-the-art, sustainable, multi-use cruise terminal.

Around the world, countries, states and cities are putting money into new facilities designed to attract and accommodate a rapidly globalizing cruise industry. Asia anticipates a huge increase in cruise passengers, many from China, the Middle East continues to see double-digit growth in cruise visitors and, in North America, ports from Vancouver to Los Angeles are investing in sustainable systems such as shore power.

One of the most recent announcements of cruise port development comes from Hong Kong where the government plans to build a new cruise terminal capable of handling two of the world’s largest ships simultaneously. The Kai Tak Cruise Terminal Building will be opened in 2013, with final completion in 2015, according to officials.

Modeled after Amsterdam’s cruise facilities, the Hong Kong terminal will be designed and built by an international group managed by Dragages Hong Kong and including as members The Port of Amsterdam, Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA) and the engineering firm Lievense. In addition to accommodating mega-cruise ships, the terminal will feature abundant space for quick processing of passengers, natural lighting and ventilation, “green” energy saving systems and a landscaped, open space for public use. The facility will be located on a former runway of Hong Kong’s airport and is expected to cost $300 million. For more information, visit www.discoverhongkong.com.

Port Talk

Port Canaveral – Port of Dreams

Located in Brevard County on Central Florida’s Space Coast just minutes from Orlando, the vacation destination of the world, Port Canaveral has evolved into one of the most popular cruise ports due to its convenient location to the "drive to" passenger market that extends as far north as the Ohio valley.

If you are traveling by car we are located in the middle of Florida’s east coast, easily accessible by an efficient system of highways, State Road 528 (The Beachline), State Road 520 and State Road 50 are the Port’s east-west highway links. These highways intersect at US Highway 1, Interstate 95, the Florida Turnpike and Interstate 4 to provide excellent congestion free access to and from the Port from Florida and the entire U.S.

If you are traveling by air, you have lots of options as you have three main airports, including Orlando International Airport just 40 minutes west of the Port, Melbourne International Airport just 40 minutes south of the Port and Orlando Sanford International about one hour northwest from the Port.

PORT OF CHARLESTON

Charleston’s cruise stock is on the rise. In addition to more than a dozen port-of-calls by various brands, vacationers now can embark from historic and charming Charleston year-round with the industry’s top cruise line. In May, Carnival Cruise Lines launched year-round voyages aboard the 2,056-passenger Carnival Fantasy, operating five-, six- and seven-day voyages to The Bahamas and Key West, Florida. The Holy City offers great access to a large and growing cruise market in the Carolinas, Georgia and Tennessee and beyond and, with 67 cruise ships on the calendar, this is Charleston’s biggest cruise season yet.

New Service at Port Everglades

Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale has opened a cell phone lot for people who are waiting to pick up debarking passengers. "We listened to our cruise guests, and the new cell phone lot is one of the direct results from their input and suggestions," said Port Everglades Director Phil Allen.

The cell phone waiting area is located in the parking lot at the Port Administration Building at 1850 Eller Drive (the main entrance to the Port off of I-595) on Saturdays and Sundays so people picking up cruise guests have a convenient and free place to park while waiting for their friends and family members to disembark. Big things are happening at the Port of Los Angeles!

In March, four new glass-enclosed gangways were added at the Port of Los Angeles to more efficiently and conveniently move passengers to and from the terminal. This $9.4 million upgrade of the terminal is just one piece of the puzzle – other recent upgrades to the terminal include the addition of 71,500 square feet of solar panels to the roof which will generate one megawatt of electricity, new lighting, new audio/visual equipment and new paint inside and out. The upgrades come as Disney prepares to homeport the Disney Wonder ship at the Port of Los Angeles in 2011 – the first time Disney has homeported a vessel outside of the Florida coast.

Summer Cruise Season Underway at Port of San Francisco

When Sea Princess sailed under the Golden Gate Bridge on May 22, 2010, she continued a 41-year tradition of round-trip Alaska cruises from San Francisco. The 1,990-passenger vessel made the first of 15 calls this summer at the City by the Bay. Eight other luxury cruise ships also visited San Francisco within the month, each headed north for summer cruising in Alaska.

The Port of San Francisco has begun installation of shoreside power equipment at its Pier 27 cruise terminal. By fall 2010, Sea Princess and other equipped ships will be able to plug into the city's power grid for power and eliminate air emissions while alongside. In addition, the Port is in the process of developing Pier 27 into a 10-acre cruise terminal and public plaza, which will become the city's primary cruise terminal by 2014.

Tampa’s guest comment scores were the highest among 20 North American Carnival home ports.

“Our Tampa team is certainly deserving of this award. They consistently offer friendly and attentive service in their ongoing efforts to provide a fun and memorable vacation experience. We congratulate everyone at the Port of Tampa on this wonderful achievement—it is truly a team effort,” Milly Martin, Carnival’s senior director of guest logistics, said. “Carnival has been sailing from Tampa for 16 years, and we continually receive outstanding feedback from our guests on their experience.”

Ege Ports’ marketing team came all the way from Turkey to take part as the only Turkish port member of CLIA.

Founded by river cruise industry pioneer, Rudi Schreiner, cruise industry executive, Kristin Karst, and former owner of Brendan Worldwide Vacations, Jimmy Murphy, AMAWATERWAYS operates deluxe river cruise vacations ranging from 7 to 30 days on the great waterways of Europe.

Since its debut in 2002, the line has redefined European river cruising with innovations that have set new standards in the industry. Each AMAWATERWAYS vessel carries 148 passengers in unequaled luxury, comfort and style. The ships feature the most spacious staterooms on the rivers; premium, hotel-style bedding, down duvets; flat-screen TVs, an Infotainment system offering internet access and a selection of movies; luxurious bath products and French balconies.

Guests enjoy complimentary Wi-Fi onboard, plus a host of other complimentary amenities; local wines at dinner, specialty coffees and bottled water. The vessels also feature a fitness center, beauty salon, whirlpool, walking track and a fleet of bicycles for passenger use. Additionally, each cruise is accompanied by an elite, professional cruise director. Accomplished tour guides lead complimentary city tours in each destination.

With a hard-earned reputation for delivering the highest-quality river cruise product in Europe, AMAWATERWAYS is continually growing to keep up with demand. MS Amadolce and MS Amalyra debuted in 2009, joining the MS Amadagio (2006), MS Amalegro (2007), MS Amacello (2008) and MS Amadante (2008).

Vancouver to Alaska Cruises -- Smooth Sailing for Americans

The Vancouver-Alaska Cruise Experience is a breeze for US passengers since Vancouver’s International Airport (YVR) and Port Authority began working with border officials to create their US Direct Program. Designed exclusively for US citizens and permanent residents, the program pre-identifies arriving cruise ship passengers, whisks them through immigration and onto a bus, direct to their same-day departing Alaska cruise ships. Their luggage is delivered automatically from airplane to stateroom.

When returning to port, the Onboard Check-in Service provides passengers their airline boarding passes and baggage labels. Passengers are bused to a dedicated passenger lounge at the Vancouver airport for a same-day flight home to any US destination. On Board Check-in streamlines customs and security clearance. Baggage transfers from ship to airline are hassle-free -- no passenger handling required. Major Alaska Cruise lines and US airlines are participating in this innovative approach to cross-border travel. Click here for more information.
