HEALTHY OPTIONS ARE FUNDAMENTAL ELEMENTS OF THE
CRUISE SHIP DINING EXPERIENCE, SAYS CLIA

The cruise lines of the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) are keeping pace with the tastes and lifestyles of today’s vacationers and offering healthy choices as part of their already extensive dining selections.

“Over the years, cruise lines have rightfully earned the reputation of offering cuisine that is of the highest quality available,” says Terry L. Dale, CLIA’s president and CEO. “That’s still the case, and now there are numerous healthy choice options to satisfy most lifestyles and dietary habits, whether it’s for breakfast, lunch, dinner or even dessert.”

Cruise ship menus feature guilt-free selections that are low in cholesterol, salt, fat, carbohydrates and calories – but always high in flavor, beautifully presented, fresh and satisfying. Some ships even offer a reduced carbohydrate bread selection and sugar-free desserts.

Menus regularly include an abundance of fresh seafood and vegetables in addition to salad bars with extensive options – ideal for those on specific diets as well as guests simply interested in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Vegan diets are also easily accommodated.

“Cruise-ship chefs can prepare specific dishes to satisfy a guest’s request,” says Dale. “But for those who require a kosher menu or who have special dietary needs, it is important that the line be made aware of these requirements in advance. That’s where a CLIA-member travel agency can play an important role.”

The CLIA-member travel agency will notify the line of the guests’ dietary requirements when the booking is made.

“These agents are the recognized experts when it comes to cruise vacations,” says Dale. “They have taken advantage of CLIA’s extensive ongoing education program, including personal cruise ship inspections and actual cruise experience. They can help consumers find the cruise that matches their lifestyle and budget.”

To help find a cruise expert to help you plan your vacation, visit CLIA’s Web site, www.cruising.org. By typing in your zip code you can find the nearest CLIA-member agency. The Web site also features a wide range of information on cruises and destinations, as well as numerous links to member cruise lines and other resources.
